We scored well at the library yesterday afternoon with some excellent books being available (sometimes it is rather hit and miss!). Out of the 8 books we came away with, we only managed to read 3 before bath time. MIB was desperate to take one up to bed to have as his bedtime story. It is sad to have to explain that, ‘no, library books stay downstairs, remember’.
Due to the cream that we use on MIB every night, most books on his bedroom shelf are at high risk of being smeared with stickiness and often end up with greasy patches on them, no matter how many times we wash/wipe our hands before the story. This makes it tricky not only with library books but other books too. For the books he got for his birthday, we had to take the decision as to which ones will be ‘downstairs’ books (kept relatively clean and nice) and ‘bedtime’ books – those likely to end up greasy and not possible to pass/sell on.
Thankfully, none of this deters his desire to read. Going to the library is something I love to do with MIB as I love books, love reading and am keen to keep MIB just as interested. He loves the library as it is a short walk away and it’s a chance to have some freedom to wander around the tiny room on his own.
I make sure we go on a regular basis as I want to keep supporting our local library. It is only open a few times a week as it is and I find it is sad that some parents I have met locally don’t even know we have a library. As kid-friendly as Waterstones is, and as much as we like going, I don’t want MIB to assume that he gets a new book just because he likes the cover.
So, if you have a library near you, please pop along and borrow some books. We need these places for our kids to learn about books, about the choices out there and also that you don’t have to buy books if you want to read them.
