Ages ago, MyItchyBoy was asking me why there were carrots next to the ham at the deli counter.
I had to explain that, although orange they were actually saveloys. Of course, I am under 50 years, so when questioned as to what a ‘saveloy’ was, I was stumped. I explained vaguely that it was a sausage and was gratefully served next.
We were waiting in the deli counter queue in Sainsbury today and once again, I got the saveloy question. I told him to ask Grandad about them next time he saw him. This is because I still haven’t found out exactly what they are. He said ‘But I want to try a bit of one!’. I said, ‘Well, you can’t do that’.
To which I got the reply: ‘But, it says there “Try before you buy, just ask”, you could just ask for me’. It is true of course…..they do have a sign that says just that….running all along the back of the deli counter.
I didn’t ask, cos I am a mean Mummy and I’m not sure it is aimed at hungry toddlers bored of shopping. Also I wasn’t sure I could trust the deli server to know all the ingredients. Most of all I blame John Lewis Food Hall for always having samples on their counter and giving MIB ideas he can use against me 🙂
