Well, it didn’t help that last time (4 mths ago) as well as this time, MyItchyBoy was seen in the Dermatology Department. Sound odd? No, I know, a dermatologist in the dermatologist department, right? Well, yes, but when you have to wait over half an hour, it’s much nicer to be seen in paediatric clinics full of toys, rather one that’s full of older patients with a bored 4 year old interrupting their peace.
Since the clinic was running late, I decided to assume that’s why the consultant was a bit short and abrupt with us this time. Less nice and friendly approach and more business-like and directed at us (rather than MyItchyBoy like you usually get in paediatrics).
We reported back that the shampoo was working well but that we were still struggling with keeping the eczema under control without steroids.
The advice given was
- 50/50 emollient, twice a day.
- Continue with the medicated shampoo.
- Ensure more robust tapering off of steroids.
- Another appointment in two months.
Last time he talked to us about Protopic. When I said that we had done some research and were happy to consider it now, he said ‘no’ and that he was happy for us to continue with the steroids for now.
So far the 50/50 is ok but no amazing change in the dryness of his skin as yet. In the night, he is still asking for Epaderm ointment. This is ok for me as the 50/50 is a bit oily for middle of the night applications.

So sorry to hear your appointment did not go that well… It is really irritating when the people who are supposed to help you are actually abrupt and make you feel like you are making them waste their time. I really feel for you; we have had a few of those… We love Epaderm ointment at home! Just out of curiosity, which steroids are you currently using? Mel

Hi, usually we go to Eumovate, but if we use Elocon it does usually clear the eczema up at least. The Epaderm ointment just doesn’t seem to get his skin moisturised.

Same here, Eumovate makes her skin feel nice (judging from her smiles and general noises), but the only things that clear the eczema for our little one are Eumovate (for her mild rashes) and Pimecrolimus (for big flare-ups). Did any doctor ever suggest giving your little one a dose of Piriton (as a sedative)so he can actually fall asleep and have a decent night’s sleep? That helps us when Jumpy is so itchy she cannot sleep (recommended by doctors and read on eczema leaflets).
