Ok, so I might be admitting here what a twit I can be, or maybe just highlighting what a danger nocturnal parenting can be.
The other night I’d just started to drop off when the inevitable ‘Mummy!’ came from the next room.
I turned the bedside lamp on so I could see but I didn’t wake Husband up too much, so I pushed the lamp down, to dampen the glare. After some fuss, an extra layer of emollient on MyItchyBoy and endless cuddles I finally got to go back to my warm bed.
Husband appeared to be asleep – or passed out due to the acrid smell in the room. The smell hit me as
I walked into the room and put me in a sudden panic. The smell was coming from the bedside table….or more precisely the plastic coating on the cover of my paperback sitting on top.
The shiny, melted circle on the cover at least hadn’t caught light, but it was being burned through by the hot lamp that I’d pushed down towards it when I got up.
The smell was terrible – even when I’d opened the windows. Husband was only sleeping – he hadn’t noticed the smell (!). Good job I came back when I did. I don’t think the smell did us any good as it was, let alone if the book had a more papery cover. Thankfully, we did get back to sleep after a while and the book is still readable.
Getting up in the night to deal with eczema is tedious at the best of times but it can also be dangerous.
Be safe and sensible, however sleepy you are!
Oh dear, sleep deprivation can make you do dangerous things. Glad you noticed the smell and avoided a disaster. Mel
