So we can manage MyItchyBoy’s eczema properly, we have always taken a small bottle of decanted emollient out and about with us. We use it quite often, especially on long days out when he needs a cream top up during the day.
Decanting the cream is easy enough. I use the Epaderm Cream which has a pump, so can pump it straight into a clean bottle over the sink. I have even found good bottles (100ml or under, so can fly with hand baggage) that have flip top lids. This means I can squeeze the cream straight onto a clean hand rather than a tub where I have to put my hand in.
The problem I have though is that after a while, the Epaderm seems to go a bit strange. Perhaps it is the changes in heat as it is always travelling with us in hot cars in summer, the cold outdoors in winter and so on. I’m not sure, but I do know that you don’t get long before it goes ‘off’.
When this happens, I’ve found that the lovely ‘keep the cream clean’ flip top bottles are now a pain as they can’t be cleaned inside. With the coloured ones, you can’t see in as well, but the clear one here shows what it looks like inside after two goes of trying to clean it.
So, now, after having recycled several mini bottles, I am keen to find a better way. Currently, we’re not taking any cream out with us at all since I haven’t been able to find an appropriate bottle and the emollients all come in huge packaging (as far as I know).
What’s your solution? How do you manage to take emollients out with you to help the itching?
