On Sunday we decided to visit a castle. It was a bit of an impulsive decision and therefore, admittedly, badly planned. The supermarket run was planned for Monday morning, so there was nothing in the house to make a decent picnic with. We managed to cobble together a small sandwich, drink and a couple of snacks for MIB and set off. After all, it’s a big castle, with more than one food outlet so we felt confident that we’d be able to find enough sustenance for us somehow.
Short version is that MIB complained about being hungry all the way home as he scoffed the sandwich before lunch and then we were only able to find some plain hot chips for him that we could be sure didn’t contain any allergens.
Now, I know that for us, it is harder to find lunch when we’re out and about for MIB. However, in a place that charges a premium for ‘handmade on site’ sandwiches for adults I was a bit saddened that the kids’ selection consisted of entirely pre-packaged, crusts-off, white bread sandwiches with no visible filling. These were teamed with the inevitable fruit shoot and either a chocolate treat or piece of fruit. It is a shame they can’t offer the same ‘homemade’ sandwiches to the kids. It would be much easier for parents like us as can just ask for certain things to be left out but I’m sure it would be really good for all children to have sandwiches that actually look like real food.
